Labs earn points by completing sustainable actions, from inventory management to freezer defrosting. The more actions you complete, the higher your score.

How the Freezer Challenge Scoring Works
Scoring is made up of two components:
- Earned Points
- Energy Savings Boost Factor
Earned Points
Each question on the Freezer Challenge scoresheet is worth a maximum of 5 Earned Points. Your lab’s score per question depends on:
- The number of cold storage units the action is completed for.
- The selection made from multiple-choice options.
Energy Savings Boost Factor
Six key actions contribute to energy savings estimates:
- Full defrost of units
- Cleaning filter intakes and coils
- Brushing frost or cleaning ice from door seals
- Adjusting ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezer setpoints to – 70°C
- Upgrading to energy-efficient units
- Retiring units permanently
How Your Competition Score is Calculated
- Your lab’s total competition score will be auto-calculated based on:
- (Earned Points)+0.2×(100estimated kWh/day saved across scoresheet)= Competition Score
- In short:
- Earned Points + Energy Savings Boost Factor = Competition Score
- For every 100 kWh/day estimated saved, your lab earns a 0.2-point boost to the final score. Your lab’s scores update in real-time as you complete the scoresheet.
Organization Scores
The scores of all labs within an organization are combined to determine the organization’s overall score. This encourages collaboration across labs.
Bottom Line
The Freezer Challenge rewards labs and organizations that:
- Commit to implementing the most sustainable cold storage best practices.
- Achieve significant energy savings through their efforts.
Note
Labs submitting scoresheets with multiple labs grouped together are not eligible for Lab Awards, but are still eligible for Organization Awards.
